Can my license be used in other states?

Today's professional engineers need to be highly mobile in order to meet the demands of the global marketplace. State borders are playing less and less of a role in determining viable business opportunities. For this reason, the NCEES offers the Council Records Program.

Through the Records Program, first established in 1923, the NCEES serves as a verifying agency for the professional engineers who seek multistate licensure. To obtain licenses to practice in multiple states, you must first hold a current engineering license with at least one licensing board.

You then work with the NCEES to create a “record.” This record is a concise report of your college transcript, licensing information, personal/professional references, experience/employment verification, and other pertinent data. You must update your Council Record annually to keep it active.

By continually maintaining a Council Record, a current and perpetual file containing information necessary for licensure is maintained for future use. When you provide written authorization, the Council can provide this information to licensing boards to support the licensure process.

To obtain a license in multiple states, you need to complete applications for a license in the states and jurisdictions in which you want to practice. When the application is submitted to the individual licensing board, your background information is retrieved from the Council Record. In most cases, the Council Record dramatically reduces the paperwork necessary to become licensed through comity.

Important: all jurisdictions require that you complete at least part of the standard application, and a few may require additional information in order to supplement the Council Record. Having a Council Record does not guarantee licensure. The Council Record is designed to be a recognized and reliable source of information for review. Visit the NCEES Web site to obtain more information about the Records Program and to download an application to create a Record.

If you need information about the evaluation of your foreign engineering credentials, please contact ECEI, AACRAO, Span Tran, Foreign Credentials Service of America, or another evaluation service. NCEES recommends contacting the state board to which you intend to apply to confirm which evaluation company is acceptable and what type of evaluation report is required.
